Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, was denied bail on Monday after being formally charged in a New York court over the alleged sexual assault of a maid at a hotel in the city.
The prominent French politician, who was considering running in next year’s presidential race, was remanded in custody until a further hearing on Friday, after a judge at the Manhattan criminal court decided against releasing him on bail of $1m put up by the wife of the IMF chief.
Mr Strauss-Kahn’s allies in the French Socialist Party were left reeling in shock at the charges against him while his political opponents said the scandal had already killed off any chances he had of running for the Elysée.
